Pianist and composer Andrew Hill made a striking debut for Blue Note Records with Black Fire, a landmark jazz recording that helped redefine modern jazz composition. Recorded in 1963, the album bridges hard bop structure with adventurous, forward-thinking improvisation.
Hill is joined by an exceptional ensemble featuring Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Richard Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Together they create a dynamic, exploratory sound built around Hill’s distinctive writing style — rhythmically complex, harmonically rich and emotionally expressive.
