Yellow Magic Orchestra - Technodelic (MOCCD13231) CD
Pioneers, innovators, explorers, extraordinary, ambitious, fearless, contemporary, artistic, talented; these are just a few of the references made to identify YMO. The collaboration started in 1978 in Tokyo by keyboardist Ryuichi Sakamoto, drummer Yukihiro Takahashi and bassist Haruomi Hosono. YMO took their chance and showed the world what they were capable of with new technology made available to them at the time. In the course of their careers in the music business, YMO got involved in film music, collaborations with artists all over the scope (from Hip-Hop to Rock), inventing the House/Acid sound and getting involved in numerous projects. The impact of this Japanese trio is not to be reckoned with and has become a given, inspiring many in the music industry.
1981 was a groundbreaking year for the music industry. By releasing BGM and Technodelic in one year, YMO made a shift happen in Pop Music. YMO introduced a new way of using samples and loops by cutting soundbites into fragments and reprogramming them with newly available computer technology. Technodelic is far more experimental then previous albums, and at the same time this 5th album is more minimalistic and full of funk and soul. Having released this much loved album, YMO remain remarkable and insanely great at inventing new ways of looking at compositions and creating a whole new music scene at the same time. Food for thought: if Technodelic wasn’t this great, what would the dance music scene sound like today?
